Similarity Check and Plagiarism Prevention Policy

Similarity Check and Plagiarism Prevention Policy

Introduction

The Journal of Modern Studies in Management & Organization (JMSMO) is committed to maintaining academic integrity and preventing plagiarism, duplicate publication, and other forms of unethical publishing practices.

In accordance with internationally recognized publication ethics principles and relevant guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), JMSMO evaluates submitted manuscripts regarding originality, appropriate use of sources, and potential inappropriate overlap with previously published works.

The purpose of similarity checking is to support academic quality, protect intellectual rights, and maintain the integrity of the scholarly record.

1. Similarity Screening of Manuscripts

All submitted manuscripts may be screened for textual similarity and potential plagiarism at different stages of the publication process, including before peer review, during editorial evaluation, or after publication.

Similarity checking is considered part of the journal’s editorial quality control process. The results are evaluated by the editorial team through qualitative and contextual assessment.

The editorial evaluation considers:

  • The extent and nature of identified similarities;
  • The sections of the manuscript where similarity occurs;
  • Whether similarities represent appropriate citation, quotation, improper paraphrasing, or unattributed use;
  • The potential impact of similarity on the originality of the manuscript.

Similarity percentage alone will not determine acceptance or rejection decisions.

2. Similarity Detection Tools

JMSMO uses appropriate and reputable similarity detection tools according to the language and characteristics of manuscripts.

For Persian-language manuscripts, JMSMO may use:

Samim Noor Similarity System

For English-language and international manuscripts, JMSMO may use internationally recognized similarity detection services, including:

Crossref Similarity Check powered by iThenticate

or other reputable similarity-checking tools.

3. Authors’ Responsibilities

Authors are responsible for ensuring the originality of their submitted manuscripts.

Authors must:

  • Properly cite all sources, ideas, data, and materials derived from other works;
  • Avoid presenting others’ work without appropriate attribution;
  • Avoid submitting previously published or simultaneously submitted manuscripts;
  • Clearly disclose any reuse of their previous work.

Any similarity report provided by authors, when requested by the journal, does not replace the journal’s own editorial assessment.

4. Similarity Reports During Submission

JMSMO may request similarity reports from authors for specific types of manuscripts or circumstances.

For Persian-language manuscripts, authors may be required to provide a similarity report obtained from the journal-approved systems before submission.

Any related costs, if applicable, shall be the responsibility of the authors.

5. Evaluation of Similarity Reports

Similarity reports are reviewed by the editorial team.

Textual similarity does not automatically indicate plagiarism. Some similarities may be acceptable, including:

  • Common technical terminology;
  • Properly cited quotations;
  • Standard methodological descriptions;
  • Necessary technical expressions.

Final decisions regarding potential ethical concerns are based on editorial evaluation and academic judgment.

6. Potential Ethical Concerns

JMSMO considers the following as potential violations of publication ethics:

  • Using others’ text, ideas, or findings without proper attribution;
  • Extensive copying from published works;
  • Reusing substantial parts of previous publications without disclosure;
  • Duplicate submission;
  • Duplicate or overlapping publication;
  • Improper use of research data or findings.

7. Handling Similarity and Plagiarism Concerns

Concerns regarding plagiarism, duplicate publication, or other integrity issues will be handled according to publication ethics principles and relevant COPE guidelines and flowcharts.

Possible actions include:

  • Requesting explanations from authors;
  • Requesting corrections;
  • Rejecting manuscripts before publication;
  • Publishing corrections or expressions of concern after publication;
  • Retracting articles in serious cases.

8. Confidentiality

Similarity reports and related evaluations are treated as confidential information and are used only for editorial assessment and decision-making purposes.

9. Editorial Independence

Similarity checking is one component of manuscript evaluation. Final decisions regarding acceptance, revision, or rejection remain the responsibility of the Editor and the journal’s editorial processes.
